Quality of life is completely related to the quality of the environment due to our mental and physical well-being depending on our surroundings and the kind of people we live together with. Although the environment is basically discussed within the context of availability and sustainability , it is equally essential for an individual’s quality of life. Environmental conditions not only directly damage human health and well-being , but also , indirectly as they may have adverse threats on ecosystems, biodiversity and even huge extreme consequences like:- natural disasters and industrial accidents
Features of Concept of Quality of life:-
Quality of life is completely concerned with the complete well being in society. The concept of quality of life divided into three main features-
- It reflected the individuals’ life situations and their perceptions instead of a country’s quality of life,
- It is a multidimensional concept which includes multiple life domains like housing conditions, education, employment, work-life balance, assessment to institutions and public services and their interplay.
- It brings objective information together on living conditions with subjective point of views and attitudes to serve a picture of overall well being in society.
Environment quality has always been one of the highest important components of the quality of life. The environment plays a significant role in people’s physical, mental and social well-being. The degradation of the environment via air pollution, noise pollution, chemicals, poor quality water and natural areas loss, merged with lifestyle changes, may be contributing towards substantial expansion in the rates of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, nervous systems and cancer. Reproductive and mental health causes are also on the rise. Asthma, allergies and various kinds of cancer related to environmental pressures are of one of the kinds of concern for children.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimated the environmental burden of disease in the Pan-european region at between 15 and 20% of total deaths and 18-20% of disability- adjusted life years, with a relatively huge burden in the eastern part of the area. So, the quality of life and environment are related and we must take care of our environment to expand our quality of life.
When people were provided the choice, 62% of respondents say they would prioritize environmental protection across the economic growth. Only few of them are satisfied with efforts for preserving the environment in their countries. Notably, 74% of respondents perceive global warming as a very and somewhat serious threat towards them and their families and 65% have faith that climate change will make their lives harder.
The significance of the natural environment to people is getting confirmed in nationally representative household surveys. For example, when asked how significant environmental protection is for their well being and life satisfaction, 88% of respondents in the German Socio-economic panel study rate it as significant or very essential. When asked about whether they are serious about environmental protection, 72% state that they are somewhat and very serious. Similarly, 70% state that they are somewhat or very serious about the consequences of climate change.
So far, we have been looking at how our environment damages our happiness all over the world, by connecting environmental factors, measured at the country level, to the happiness of survey respondents living in the respective country. Poor environmental quality has its greatest causes on people whose health status is already not too good.
A certain level of qualities which guarantees the inhabitants a sustainable welfare may have, from different points of view, socio,cultural, economic and spatial characteristics. The environment is an important component of the millennium development Goals.
