Before we are going to our Kitchen let me discuss with you some interesting facts about what we are not enjoying by not composting our Kitchen Waste. A normal person from a city produces about 700 grams of waste materials per day and something approximately 250 Kilogram in a year. We are just putting them in the bin and not segregating them into wet and dry waste which makes it impossible to compost them. These waste materials are becoming black gold if we compost them with all the right procedures. If we talk about what municipal authorities are doing in this matter, we want to tell you that we are not receiving that much value of what really matters. As we are not segregating our wet and dry waste municipal authorities are able to compost only 0.21 percent of waste. So as you have found that we are at a wide loss and damaging mother nature by just avoiding a few simple steps.

So I think now you are thinking about the exact compost and composting that we are discussing in the beginning. Compost is an organic material that has been decomposed in a procedure called composting. Compost is rich in nutrients. It is applied, for example, in gardens, landscaping, horticulture, urban agriculture, and organic farming. That is why it is now referred to as Black Gold. You can use this black gold in your garden and produce your plants with rich soil.

Composting organism needs 4 basic conditions and those are –

  • Carbon – It looks like brownish dry materials and it generates heat which serves energy to the plants.
  • Nitrogen – It helps carbon to grow more and their materials look greenish in color, such as fruit and vegetables.
  • Oxygen – It helps in decomposition of waste materials
  • Water – Right amount of water has to be provided for activity.

Okay now we are going to discuss what type of waste material materials our kitchen generates. It involves cooked foods, leftovers, vegetable peels, fruit peels, tea bags, coffee extracts, egg shells, bones and tissue paper. For composting purposes we also involve garden wastes such as:- leaves, weeds and flowers. So there are a lot of things which come from our kitchen and we can transfer them into black gold.So let’s start composting. It is interesting to be aware that you have to appear for any additional things for making compost, what you really have to require is just a small space in your balcony and garden. One most significant thing that you have to be aware of is that waste segregation is one of the significant parts of composting. If we don’t segregate one waste from another then we can’t decompose them effectively as well as efficiently and the composting procedure will be impossible. For that we have to maintain 2 separate dustbins. One for dry waste materials and other for wet materials, the green is referred to wet wastes while the blue one is made for dry waste. For our composting purpose we are gonna maintain 2 dustbins and one bag. One kitchen dustbin for organic waste, a bag for the recyclables and another bin for other waste.

We put recyclables such as:- newspapers, bottles, cans, e-waste, and many other recyclables.

For the purpose of the decomposition of waste, we can use various kinds of containers. It can be Hoster, A Hoster was a 4-foot-long earthen pot with numerous tiers. The main use is to convert biodegradable Kitchen waste into manure. It is designed up of clay, with pores on each tier that acted as catalysts for the decomposition., Mesh Composting Ward (Mesh composting is a procedure of developing organic manure in an iron mesh which is customized as per the requirement of the consumers) or you can dig a pit (Pit composting is a method of converting biodegradable waste into organic manure using the action of microorganisms inside customized pits. The size and number of pits will vary as the amount of waste generated in an area differs) for the composting process. It totally depends upon you and your garden size, all of them are equally efficient for composting. If you are able to use any of these things then you can only use a random container with some whole for the oxidizing purpose.

After the segregation procedure what you have to perform is just put easily degradable things in a composting container and mix it over a period of 4 – 5 days. After completion of 20 days, there will be great chances that now our compost is completely ready to be used in our garden and a plant.

Things required to create compost –

  • Hoster or Pot with holes to perform compost
  • Dry Waste for Carbon.
  • Wet Waste for Nitrogen.
  • Rake for mixing the compost

Points to remember –

  • Give proper lighting to your compost.
  • The separation process is a must for composting.
  • Mix it well periodically.
  • Use a breathable container for composting so that the procedure will be fast.
  • Don’t provide much water for composting and avoid using Indian dishes with gravy.
  • By doing compost of your kitchen waste you are going to help mother nature to be wealthier and healthy,

So keep on protecting our mother nature, Stay Healthy and Happy Composting!!
